The family name “Kalinowski” (pronounced kay-lin-ov-skee) is famous in Europe for being associated with vast estates, prestigious palaces, and castle fortresses throughout Polish history. Our Kalinowski family immigrated to the United States in 1909; therefore, I am the fourth generation of American Kalinowski. From my mother's father, my Grandfather Hoyt, I am the thirteenth generation of American Hoyt, tracing back to 1629 (Mr. Thomas Hooker & Co., Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the most influential key precedent for the U.S. Constitution).

Kalina is a good omen that beautifully adorns the landscaping of homes, buildings, and gardens. It signifies the interconnectedness of the Earth with celestial forces and celebrates the resilience, creativity, and wisdom that nature brings to our lives. The plant is found both in the United States and internationally.

Symbolically the guelder rose snowball viburnum with its crimson berries, represent Earth’s correlation with the sun, stars, and moon. As the plant first begins to bloom, the circular network of budding florets looks like stars reflecting the surrounding light. When fully in bloom the circular ball of flowers glow like the sun and the moon. The growth of the plant mirrors the spring to summer seasons while in bloom, the autumn season as red berries grow surrounded by warm amber foliage, and finally bright glowing ruby-like berry emblements persevere dazzling in contrast to the frosty white snow of winter. The snowball berries represent the earth, new beginnings, family roots, a source of sustenance, and illumination of hope during the darkest time of the year. A metaphor of immortal nature. In this way, the nomenclature and etymology of Kalin resonates with “kalen” as a word symbolic of agricultural cycle or “koło,” like Poland’s fabled founder Piast Kołodziej and the kalendarium of the seasons.

Kalinowa is associated with festivities, like the Festival of Kalina/Kalinka, serving as a metaphor for the blooming of new life and a celebration of the beauty and significance of the viburnum guilder rose. Often vinok berry and flower crowns are worn in the spring to midsummer, for the Kalyta holiday, and the festivals of the winter solstice in honor of the sun. “Kalinka” is also of the most famous folk songs and dance traditions in the world.
